9 Foods To Boost Your Metabolism

 By Dr. Evan Apostolakis

Some foods actually help boost your metabolism and burn fat. Consuming these nine foods as part of a healthy diet will make achieving your weight loss goals that much easier. They are:

Green Tea. The American Journal of Clinical Nutrition reports that drinking four cups of green tea a day helped people lose more than six pounds in eight weeks. The primary reason is epigallocatechin gallate, better known as ECCG. This healthy compound speeds up your brain and nervous system, causing you to burn more calories. Iced green tea works just as well.

Grapefruit. This is considered a diet super fruit for good reason. Grapefruit lowers insulin levels in our bodies. Lower insulin levels after meals helps the body process food faster and more efficiently. The result is more calories are burned and less stored as fat.

Hot Peppers. If you like your food spicy you are in luck. If not, you may want to reconsider. Spice, speeds up weight loss. Capsaicin, a compound found in hot peppers heats up your body, causing additional calories to be melted away. You can eat hot peppers raw, or add cayenne pepper or hot sauce to your foods to get the benefits.

Lean Meats. Protein-rich lean meats help build lean muscle tissue, causing the body to burn more calories and raises your metabolism. Protein also has a high thermogenic effect. This means you burn about 30 percent of the food during digestion. Good sources of protein are lean chicken, turkey fish, and lean cuts of beef and pork. Beans, lentils, and tofu are good options for vegetarians.

Whole Grains (oatmeal, brown rice). The body burns twice as many calories trying to break down fiber-rich foods then processed ones. Whole grains, like grapefruit, speed up metabolism by stabilizing insulin levels. Quinoa (actually a seed, not a grain) is also an excellent choice.

Almonds. Nuts such as almonds are full of nutrients such as essential fatty acids which help trigger your metabolism. A small handful a day is sufficient.

Apples. High in dietary fiber and low in calories, apples make an excellent snack food. You will feel fuller longer because of the fiber and your body will have to burn calories to break it down.

Greek Yogurt. Natural yogurt’s high protein levels requires the body to work harder to be processed, burning more calories. Greek yogurt is an even better choice. It has twice the protein of regular yogurt. Thus, keeping you fuller even longer and more work is required to digest it, burning more calories.

Spinach. The green leafy vegetable is amongst the most nutritious foods on earth. It is high in antioxidants, magnesium, potassium, iron and vitamin C, and is helps speed up metabolic function.

By adding these nine foods to your diet on a regular basis throughout the week, and you will burn fat faster, and reach your weight loss goal sooner.
