Don’t Let People Bring You Down!

nicole By Nicole Dominique Le Mair

It is the month of January, a month in which the light should shine across many parts of the world, a month in which many people wonder if they are in the right job, if they achieved what they should have this year. It is also a month in which I receive a lot of questions about what do I do with my life from a people perspective and should I take the advice of not searching for that new job or house or car and stay put enjoying what I have.

I just want to share the following in support:

There are always naysayers in this world. They might be former friends or family members. They might be opposition or competition. There is always someone who will attempt to shame you or bring you down. No matter what, don’t be ashamed. You are the person that you are meant to be.

The people that seek to bring you down can’t change who you are!

Some days it will feel as if you’re attacked on all sides, but the good news is that you’re only attacked on all sides. You aren’t being attacked from the inside. They can’t get inside of you and change who you are. You are still that strong leader and a mentor. The people who work against you aren’t worth bothering with! They cannot be who you are, they cannot change who you are, they cannot hold you back.

The only true threat that these people present is you allowing them to get to you.

When you do this, you let them in. You may even change. It creates doubt within yourself and causes you to second guess your decisions. It may even cause you to change. This will make you an ineffective leader. It can cause you to make bad decisions or to falter in the face of adversity. It may even result in you abandoning your core beliefs. The people attack from the outside, but you decide whether or not you let them in. You decide whether or not they are worth paying attention to (they’re not, by the way).

“Never be ashamed! There’s some who will hold it against you, but they are not worth bothering with.” – J. K. Rowling

Just remember that even those with good results will have detractors. Some people have nothing better to do than to complain. Some people never want to see anyone succeed. And some people don’t want to see anyone do good in the world.

Have you ever watched a sport’s game?

Think about the players. They ignored the crowds and did what had to be done. They ignored cheering or booing and simply did what their team needed. Have you ever watched a game where a player let the ‘boo’s’ get to them? They take it personally and begin to make bad decisions. They make bad decisions and they begin to make simple mistakes. This happens to you when you listen to your detractors.

Never be ashamed of who you are. Use your skills as a leader to bring out the best in others so that you can show your results to the world.

As long as you are inspiring people and leading, you are doing what you need to do. Don’t be ashamed of who you are. In the end, you are the only one that has to live with yourself!
