Intruder

By Mira Khatib

Creeping into my thoughts at night

Like a thief stealing my peace of mind

Uninvited, unwelcomed, you stay

Messing with my head as I lay

Shredding my insides apart

Crawling all the way to my heart

“Get out” I demand “don’t put out your hand!”

I will take a stand against the hurricane you planned

I will shut you out with all my might

I will put up a fight till the very last light

Till I fall asleep and can only breathe

Praying you don’t invade my dreams

I’m at peace once again but for how long and when?

With the alarm bell ringing I wake

Another day I have to overtake

With the question in the back of my mind

How long before you visit my thoughts again?
