Many people believe that Mother’s day is a Hallmark holiday but the day has roots that go way back.
In Greek mythology spring festivals were held in honor of the maternal goddess Rhea. She was the wife of Cronus and was believed to be the mother of many Greek Gods.
In 250 B.C. ancient Romans celebrated a spring festival dedicated to a mother goddess named, Cybele.
In the 1600’s England, Mothering Sunday took place on the 4th Sunday of Lent. It began with a prayer service in honor of the Virgin Mary. Afterwards children would present their moms with flowers.
This year instead of the traditional presents try as a family to give an alternative present to mum:
Show appreciation and gratitude
Dads can ask the children to take some time and think about how special their mom is and how much they depend on her and need her in their lives.
Ask the kids to write down why they are grateful and present it to mum.
Put mum first
Give mum the opportunity to have the day off guilt free and relax at a spa or with her friends and take a break from the family.
If this year you are buying a gift for mother’s day put the time and effort to think what she really needs. Buy her something that she’s wanted for a long time but hasn’t got yet.
Commit to a change
Commit that each member of the family will from now on give her a helping hand by doing a task for her, maybe something that she doesn’t like doing.
Don’t forget to show your love and appreciation not only on mother’s day but on every day around the year.
