In this day and age women and men seem to be on a quest for remaining healthy and trying to stay forever young, or more realistically speaking, to stay looking youthful for as long as possible. The media and the world of glamour from models to movie stars are all raising the bar of perfection to what beauty and healthy should look like and be. We are swamped with ads of various products that promise us ageless beauty all in a simple tube yet with miraculous results. I always say if something sounds too good to be true, usually it is so.
From Botox to liposuction to the common covering up of gray hair we are pressured in maintaining our youth. But whatever happened with growing old gracefully? And why are many people becoming more judgmental based on physical appearances than one’s character and knowledge? Can we really beat the clock and go against gravity and the will of nature and outlive time? But one thing we have to keep in mind is looking young and healthy or actually being healthy are two different things.
Sure we all treasure our lives and staying healthy and beautiful is part of the essential equation to maintaining a contented and fulfilled life. Yet many times trying to achieve the perfection required, leaves many of us feeling like we are against a losing battle. Putting ourselves at risk whether it’s going under the knife of surgery or depriving ourselves from food we love and crave or spending endless hours daily huffing and puffing at the gym, somehow we almost always end up falling short from the ideal image in our minds. Most of the time this endless pursuit for everlasting youth leave us with low self esteem and exhaustion, ironically working against what we set out to do in the first place which is preserving our youth.
But what is more important? A truly healthy long life, or simply just looking young and healthy for as long as possible? One would think the answer should be straightforward yet it’s not so simple. Many studies have been drawn about what makes our bodies keep on going and what we can do to keep them going even longer, yet there are no fixed rules to follow to do that. And although good looks might help in making us feel pleased yet there is no certainty in doing so one would actually live longer.
One thing for sure that since world war two people’s life span has indeed increased due to better health care, education, having a new outlook towards life and sharing good human relationships. Statistics prove that being content and optimistic are two main reasons for having good health and looking young.
But still many people suffer from continued stress, another hazardous factor in today’s modern world. Its affects on our health and beauty could have lasting damage. Therefore maintaining a positive attitude and trying to distress every once in a while is just as important to enriching our health and beauty.
Depriving our bodies of physical activities is yet another bad habit of our time. We drive instead of walk; use elevators instead of stairs and many sit at desks for hours making excuses for not having the time to exercise. And unfortunately many abuse their bodies by smoking. All this affects having a good-looking, healthy body that will live long.
Obesity is another negative factor affecting our health. In many cases it causes high blood pressure, diabetes, heart attacks, strokes, even to some; low self-esteem. It is best to be moderate in everything we do. Exercise and eating a well balanced diet, without necessary depriving oneself; does not mean prevention of many illnesses yet they can cut the chances of them occurring.
So in conclusion don’t feel pressured by today’s Hollywood high and sometimes far fetched standards and keep in mind that the stars that follow these ideals are doing so because in many cases they have to, after all their career is not only based on their talents but a big part to their appearance as well, and not always are good young looks the way to a healthy happy life.
Be optimistic, relax and enjoy your years. Listen to your body and needs, and do what is right for you It’s not wrong to indulge ourselves once in a while in great beauty treatments and try some of the so called “miracle creams” that make us look good but what is more important is in feeling good. Do what makes you feel happy that is what counts towards living a healthy satisfying long life.
