Meet the inspirational Palestinian teacher Hanan Al Hroub from Samiha Khalil High School in Al Bireh, she has been awarded the $1 million Global Teacher Prize for her work in schools in the region. Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid, Vice President and Ruler of Dubai, presented Ms Al Hroub with the award on the final day of the Global Education and Skills Forum in Dubai.
Hanan who grew up in Bethlehem refugee camp knew what it was like to be exposed to violence on a regular basis, she wanted to make a change when she entered primary education after her children were left traumatized by a shooting they witnessed on their way home from school.
Defying all odds Hanan found ways to tweak the traditional educational curriculum to suite the needs of her students. With limited resources and difficult circumstances of the occupation she found a way to implement “play and learn” concept to slowly change the children’s attitude, understanding and learning experiences in a positive manner. Now other educators are following her teaching methods in their classrooms.
“The educator’s role is a very noble and critical one as it affects societies. Students have the power to change the future. Education is the most powerful weapon” Hanan Al Hroub
