Their Eyes Kissed With Such Briefness

By Phen Weston

Their eyes kissed with such briefness. He knew it was over. His throat compressed and his heart beat harder and faster, feeling as though it would tear through his chest at any minute. He was relieved and happy, excitement building. Emotions overwhelmed his brittle defenses. He was free at long last!

Except.

That was a lie.

Their eyes kissed with such briefness. He knew it was over. His throat compressed and his heart beat harder and faster, feeling as though it would tear through his chest at any minute. Inside his head sanity imploded and emotions overwhelmed his brittle defences. All he had known and come to love, his one constant in the amorphous chaotic atrophy of existence, had given up on him. Who was he if not hers?

The doors closed slowly behind her as if life had been reduced to near infinite nothing. Fragile and fragmented he clung on what evanescent sanity he could. The walls encroached all around him, asphyxiating, devastating.

Self-doubt and self-destruction, his greatest guard against the onslaught of youthful fears and failures, had once again achieved a new reign in his ecosphere. To be intimately close to someone had been his utmost wish throughout much of his years. Through hurt, fear and ego, a shield had been created to protect him from the dangers of wolves in sheep’s clothing, the empty promises, and the scornful manipulations.

Never let them close, lest they will consume you. Now it conquered and devoured all hopes and dreams. Fighting against the demons and the dragons, until all in its path lay in bloody devastated ruin before him. Demon, dragon, friend, lover.

Through fear and feverish famine of his desires and dalliances, she, his passion, his tenderness, his truest love, lay in ruin likewise. With swift foolishness and selfishness, he had completely desolated any chance of that which they both yearned for. He had become the demon he pursued to slay; and by doing so had destroyed, with such totality, her chance of trusting and receiving that which had always haunted him. She would never love him again, could not even look at him, without heartache and sorrow engulfing her soul. To see such hatred and fire in eyes that had once offered the sweetest and most tender equations of love and longing was enveloping, obliterating. From that moment on she would never trust a lover completely. Subconsciously, fears of his mournful mistake would plague her forever.

“What have I done?”

Their eyes kissed with such briefness. He knew it was over. His throat compressed and his heart beat harder and faster, feeling as though it would tear through his chest at any minute. He had destroyed his truest love.
